Our Sea Sickness Comes in Waves

the morning sunrise
Today we brought our sea legs, or didn’t, for two boat excursions! After a hearty morning of Nuke ‘Em, we enjoyed a nice breakfast and promptly changed into our swimsuits and headed for the boathouse. Our first boat excursion was to the sandbar, a beautiful mid-ocean beach where we able to learn more about sandbars and snorkel to experience the marine life.

Beach nuke'em!
at the sandbar!
Our second boat excursion was not as relaxing. We motored out to the deep waters to set up a long line (it’s a fishing line with multiple hooks, designed to catch larger fish and SHARKS!). While long lines can extend miles, this particular line was about 400 meters to 500 meters long, and it was designed so we can safely catch, study, and then release our shark friends! Then after setting up the long line, we snorkeled in a nearby coral reef, where some of us discovered the Bahamanian fish. During this time the choppy waters and bobbing boats made some of us a bit seasick and we returned to shore while the rest went to collect the long line. Unfortunately there were no sharks on the long line, but we were able to see some stingrays and larger fish.

Off to set a long line!
wide eyes, full hearts, can't lose (my lunch)
bet you'll never guess what we found down here...
a sting ray! (can you spot'em?)
sadly we did not catch any sharks to study, but we still got our hands dirty.
To conclude the long sea day, we viewed a presentation on sea turtles from a member of the CEI team who was researching Green Sea Turtle’s eating habits during low and high tide. This was very informational and we learned a lot about all 7 species of sea turtles around the world. Did you know a Leatherback Sea Turtle can grow up to 1600 pounds and 9 feet long? Pretty neat stuff.

Here's to hoping our sea sickness subsides,
Paddy and Claire
